Lake Kivu

The Chemistry of Kivu: A Potential Threat and Resource

Lake Kivu is a freshwater lake, but its chemical composition is unique and potentially dangerous. The lake contains high concentrations of dissolved methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) at its depths. The methane, primarily produced by microbial reduction of volcanic CO2, is estimated to be about 65 cubic kilometers (16 cubic miles), while the carbon dioxide content is around 256 cubic kilometers (61 cubic miles) .

These gases pose a significant threat to the millions of people living around the lake. If a limnic eruption were to occur, it could release vast amounts of these gases, potentially causing widespread asphyxiation and triggering lake tsunamis. The 1986 disaster at Lake Nyos in Cameroon, where a limnic eruption released a lethal cloud of carbon dioxide, serves as a stark reminder of what could happen .

However, these gases also represent a significant resource. The methane trapped in the lake can be extracted and used as a source of energy. Several projects have been initiated to harness this potential, including the KivuWatt project, which aims to extract methane and convert it into electricity, significantly boosting Rwanda’s energy supply .

Methane Extraction: Turning Danger into Opportunity

Efforts to harness Lake Kivu’s methane began on a small scale, with gas being used to power local industries. However, it wasn’t until 2011 that large-scale extraction projects took off. ContourGlobal, a UK-based energy company, launched the KivuWatt project, which uses an offshore platform to extract, separate, and clean the gases from the lake bed. The purified methane is then piped to onshore generators to produce electricity .

The first phase of the KivuWatt project, which produces 26 megawatts (MW) of electricity, has already been completed, and future phases aim to expand this capacity to over 100 MW. This project is not only a solution to the potential dangers posed by the lake’s gases but also a crucial step in addressing the energy needs of the region .

In addition to KivuWatt, other companies are also exploring methane extraction. For example, Symbion Power has been granted concessions to develop additional power plants, which are expected to add further capacity to Rwanda’s electricity grid in the coming years .

The Biological Richness of Lake Kivu

Despite its unique chemical composition, Lake Kivu supports a diverse array of aquatic life. The lake is home to about 28 species of fish, including both native and introduced species. The most notable native species include the Lake Rukwa minnow, several species of barbs, and a variety of cichlids, some of which are endemic to the lake .

Introduced species, such as the Lake Tanganyika sardine, have become economically and nutritionally significant for the local population. These sardines, known locally as “Isambaza,” were introduced in the late 1950s to fill an empty ecological niche and have since become a vital part of the local fishery .

The lake’s phytoplankton and zooplankton communities are also of interest to scientists. The first comprehensive survey of phytoplankton, conducted in 2006, revealed that the lake is oligotrophic, with low nutrient levels and primary production dominated by diatoms and cyanobacteria. This balance is crucial for the health of the lake’s ecosystem and the fish populations that depend on it .

Challenges and Conservation Efforts

Lake Kivu faces several environmental challenges, including overfishing and pollution. In recent years, illegal fishing practices have led to a decline in fish stocks, threatening the livelihoods of local communities and the health of the lake’s ecosystem. Between 2017 and 2020, fish production in Lake Kivu dropped significantly, a trend attributed to harmful fishing methods that disrupt fish reproduction and damage the lake’s ecological balance .

To address these challenges, both Rwanda and the DRC have implemented measures to regulate fishing and protect the lake’s resources. Efforts are also underway to monitor and manage the lake’s unique chemical dynamics to prevent potential disasters .
